Sifting through Search Engines to get Results

Reading through search engine newsletters this morning confirmed what I've been integrating into my own searches.  I'm using Yahoo! more and Google less. Something on Yahoo!

I spotted for the first time  is that if I wanted a specific search phrase searched to put a "+" sign in front of the search phrase for exact results.  That was new to me - perhaps it's been there for a long time but I've failed to see it, much less try it.  I did and it worked like a charm.  Disillusioned with Google searches?  Does it seem that what comes up are directory after directory rather than specific companies?  Why do I have to search for a keyword phrase
and then search further inside a directory, which often are a jumbled mess. I don't know how all this is going to flush out, but one thing I read on Market Watch this morning is that because of the high price of Google ads (pay per click advertising) some megalithic sized companies spending millions on advertising are now looking to shift money back into print ads versus
Google PPC.  Why?  Bidding cost per click for particular keywords and phrases has skyrocketed and that would be okay but the scanty results some companies are getting has put the cost of advertising at a whopping 40% of their product.  Google is making huge profits but one thing to praise is that they have just moved into the #1 spot as far as the Best Company to work for.

There's a new search engine called WINZY - love the name and the concept in that users have
chances to winzy a prize by using the SE.  I did a basic search and didn't get good results so I'll wait on this one until the database catches up to the catchy name!
The Niche Market of Industry Specific Search Engines is on the rise - I personally have spent money researching how to build out a SE for this purpose - Biz 2 Biz and Biz to Consumer want relevant results quickly without frustration from sifting through copious directories. While I'm talking about my wish list, I want results that I can read.  How about an English only Search Engine?  That's getting to be a huge issue now that search engines are flooded with foreign
language results.
